ABOUT THE BUTTS IN A BOAT
Butts in a Boat Vancouver Prostate Cancer Dragon Boating Team

The Butts in a Boat formed in 2016 becoming the first prostate cancer dragon boating team in the world. It all began where dragon boating for cancer patients began: right here in False Creek, Vancouver!

The team now consists of a mix of prostate cancer patients and female paddlers who practice twice a week from April until the end of September, competing in a handful of regattas each season.

The Butts have even inspired other prostate cancer dragon boating teams to form, including Butts in a Boat Moncton, and a future Butts in a Boat Toronto team!

DRAGON BOATING
FOR CANCER PATIENTS

Dragon boating for breast cancer survivors is now an international sport, which began here in Vancouver as a part of a research study 20 years ago.

The original team, called “Abreast in a Boat”, continues to this day paddling in Vancouver and surrounding area. And it has spawned other teams. There are now some 100 breast cancer teams worldwide…and the sport has expanded to help patients with other cancers and chronic illnesses.

'ONE STROKE,
TWENTY-TWO PEOPLE':
Exploring Prostate Cancer Patients' Participation in Dragon Boating

The Butts in a Boat proudly participated in a research study intended to analyze the potential benefits of dragon boating for prostate cancer patients, comparing results to previous studies in breast cancer dragon boating teams.

The study was published in 2020 in the Journal of Psychosocial Oncology and suggested that dragon boating can lead to improvements in physical fitness and health. The study also suggested that having the team as a social support system can benefit the mental health of its team members too!

BUTTS TESTIMONIALS

Bryon H.

“Picture it! False Creek at dusk, on the water with 22 Butts guys and AIAB gals, working the paddles hard to the coach's count, knowing that in an hour's time we'll be relaxing on shore, comparing experiences with our fellow PCa travellers, or just discussing our next social event over a beer. What's not to like?!”
